The Best Retinol on the Market?
I bought the Neostrata Retinol + NAG Complex back in January from Effortless Skin after hearing skincare queens Caroline Hirons and Nadine Baggot talking about it being one of the strongest and most effective retinols available. I had been dabbling in retinol for a couple of years on and off and thought I may as well commit to a strong retinol that I would see results with!
As I’ve mentioned before, retinol is one of the very few ingredients that has actually been scientifically proven to work on preventing premature ageing. Retinol, also known as Vitamin A, stimulates the production of new skin cells, which helps to reduce fine lines, firm the skin and help with skin discolouration. Retinol products can cause irritation, dryness and peeling while your skin acclimatises to it and Effortless Skin recommends that you use the Neostrata product twice a week to begin with to minimise irritation.
The Neostrata Retinol + NAG Complex contains 0.5% encapsulated retinol to ensure the ingredient is released into the skin gradually during the night. It also includes patented NeoGlucosamine (NAG) which together with the retinol, volumises and re-densifies the skin. This duo claims to ‘effectively increase collagen production and the surrounding support matrix residing in the lower layers of the skin to lift and firm facial contours while reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.’
My skin is on the sensitive/dry side and using this twice a week straight away as advised made my skin peel like crazy. I took it down to once a week for six weeks and then bumped it up to twice a week. I ended up using it three times a week with no peeling, just a little bit of sensitivity. (One thing to note, I wouldn’t advise putting this on your neck, skin is far more sensitive on this part of your body.)
I try not to examine my skin closely too much because I don’t want to get obsessive about it, but I really think this product made a huge difference in improving how my skin looks. It evened out my skin tone and prevented any fine lines from forming (I'm in my thirties so it's a continuous battle to keep them at bay). I started wearing just tinted SPF during the day rather than CC cream or foundation around summertime this year and I noticed a definite increase in people complimenting my skin.
If you are a retinol user and want to step up your results, I would highly recommend this product. Or, if you want to use Tretinoin, this would be a great product to use first to prepare your skin. Remember to start slow and work your way up and you will notice results after a few months. You absolutely must wear a dedicated SPF of 30 and above every single day!
